The 8-week NCLEX study plan
Eight weeks gives you time to address real content gaps. Phase-by-phase breakdown: content foundation, question volume, mock-driven targeting.
Eight weeks is comfortable. Long enough to rebuild a weak content area, short enough to keep urgency. The structure: 3 weeks of content + low-volume questions, 3 weeks of high-volume questions + targeted content, 2 weeks of mock-driven taper.
Phase 1 (Weeks 1-3): content foundation
Goal: refresh every body system at least once. 40 questions/day mixed topics. 90 minutes/day content review on a rotation: cardiac, pulm, neuro, GI, renal, endo, heme/onc, OB, peds, psych. One off day per week.
Baseline mock on Day 1. Re-mock end of week 3. Score should move 5-10 points.
Phase 2 (Weeks 4-6): question volume + targeting
Goal: build the muscle of mixed-topic recognition. 60-70 questions/day. Content review drops to 30 minutes/day on whatever your last 50 questions exposed as weak. Mistake bank becomes the primary review tool, re-do all wrong answers from yesterday before doing new questions.
Week 5 has a full mock. Week 6 ends with an NGN-focused day (50 NGN items).
Phase 3 (Weeks 7-8): taper and execute
Week 7: 50 questions/day. Mock #3 on day 49. Mistake bank only for review.
Week 8: gradual taper. Days 50-52: 40 questions. Days 53-54: 30 questions. Day 55: bag packed, test center located. Day 56: test day.
Common 8-week mistake
Coasting in weeks 1-2 because there's so much runway. By week 4 you're behind your own plan and now you're cramming with 4 weeks left. The fix: set a hard mid-runway checkpoint, a paid mock at end of week 4, and treat it as a deadline. Plans without deadlines don't survive contact with real life.
Frequently asked
How many questions total in 8 weeks?
Roughly 2,500-3,000 if you follow the daily counts. That's the high end of useful, diminishing returns kick in past 3,000.
Should I add a class?
If you have specific content gaps (e.g., never really learned ABG interpretation), a 1-2 session targeted class is fine. A full live review course is overkill for an 8-week plan unless your baseline is below 55%.
