Advance Directives on the NCLEX
Living will, durable POA for healthcare, DNR, POLST.
Advance directives document patient wishes. NCLEX tests recognition and respect for them.
Types
Living will: written wishes about life-sustaining treatments. Durable POA for healthcare: designates decision-maker if patient incapacitated. DNR/DNAR: do not attempt resuscitation. POLST/MOLST: physician orders for life-sustaining treatment, portable across settings.
Respect
Follow documented wishes. Re-verify on admission. Patient can change at any time if competent.
Family disagreement
Patient's documented wishes prevail. Family input is welcome but doesn't override.
Frequently asked
DNR means no care?
No, means no resuscitation if heart/lungs stop. Other treatments continue per care plan.
