After passing the NCLEX: license activation

The timeline from Quick Results to working as an RN. State-by-state differences and what your employer needs.

Quick Results = you passed. License activation = you can work. The gap is 1-30 days depending on state.

Fast states

Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, license number often posts within 24-72 hours of Quick Results. Some employers accept the BON verification site as proof for orientation start.

Slow states

California, New York, Illinois, 1-4 weeks for license number to post. Background check turnaround drives most of the delay.

What employers need

Most hospitals require a copy of your license verification from the BON site (free print-out). Some require the physical license (mailed 4-6 weeks later).

Compact license

If you're licensed in a Compact state (NLC), your license is multi-state automatically. You can work in any other Compact state without re-licensing. Non-Compact moves require endorsement.
