Dosage Calculation Tests in Nursing School
How to pass dosage calc tests, practice volume, formula memorization, common traps.
Most programs require 90-100% on dosage calc tests. Often 3 attempts before academic action.
Formulas to memorize
Desired/Have × Volume. Weight-based (mg/kg). IV drip rate (mL/h). IV drop rate (gtt/min).
Common traps
Unit conversions (mg to mcg, kg to g, mL to L). Pounds to kg conversions. Decimal placement. Don't round midway, only at end.
Practice
100-200 practice problems before each dosage calc test. Use your textbook and free online sources. Khan Academy nursing math is decent.
Test day
Show all work. Label units. Double-check unit conversions. Calculator allowed (basic, not programmable).
