Maslow Priority Framework on the NCLEX

When Maslow applies for NCLEX prioritization, the hierarchy, and tiebreakers.

Maslow's hierarchy ranks needs from physiological to self-actualization. Used as NCLEX priority framework when no physiologic threat exists.

Hierarchy

  1. Physiological (airway, food, water, sleep, pain).
  2. Safety.
  3. Love/belonging.
  4. Esteem.
  5. Self-actualization.

Application

Pick the lowest unmet need on the hierarchy first.

ABCs supersede

When physiologic threats are present, use ABCs. Maslow is the tiebreaker when no threat exists.
