First Day of Nursing Clinical: Survival Guide

What to bring, what to wear, what to do when you don't know what to do.

First clinical day is overwhelming. Here's the realistic approach.

What to bring

Stethoscope, watch with second hand, pen (multiple), small notebook, drug guide pocket book or app, snack.

What to wear

Per your school's uniform. Closed-toe shoes. Hair tied back. Minimal jewelry. ID badge visible.

What to do

Be 15 minutes early. Introduce yourself to your assigned nurse. Ask what you can do to help. Stay with your patient when possible.

What to say when you don't know

'I haven't done this before, can you show me?' is the right answer every time. Faking it leads to harm.

Downtime

Don't hide in the break room. Restock supplies, help turn patients, take vitals. Visibility = better grades and references.

Frequently asked

Patient asks me a question I can't answer?

'I'm a student. Let me find your nurse.' Don't guess clinical info.

Instructor watching me, nervous?

Normal. They're watching technique and safety, not perfection.
