How to Actually Pass Nursing School (Without Losing Your Mind)
An honest pillar guide to surviving nursing school, study systems, clinical, mental health, the things you can skip.
Nursing school is hard in a specific way. It rewards endurance, organization, and the willingness to ask for help. Smart but disorganized students fail; average students with good systems thrive. Here's the working playbook.
The mindset shift from undergrad
You can't cram. The volume is too large. Daily review of small chunks beats weekend marathons. The students who stay current week-to-week outperform the cram-and-recover crowd.
Study system
Daily: 30-60 min reviewing the day's lectures. Active recall (testing yourself), not re-reading. Weekly: 2-hour deep-dive on the week's topics. Pre-exam: 1-2 sessions of practice questions plus targeted review of weak areas.
Use NCLEX-style questions from day one
Your school exams are NCLEX-style. Doing 10-20 NCLEX questions daily on the topic you're learning teaches you to apply, not memorize.
Clinical
Be prepared, be early, be helpful. Carry a small notebook. Ask the right questions ('what should I be watching for in this patient?'). Don't disappear when there's downtime, find a nurse to shadow.
Care plans
Use a template. NANDA diagnoses → goals → interventions → rationale. Don't reinvent each one. Most have similar structure for similar diagnoses.
Money
WIC if eligible (covers some basics). Textbooks: rent or buy older editions, share with classmates. CNA gig: hospital exposure, builds resume, modest income.
Mental health
Nursing school depression and anxiety are common. School counseling is free or cheap, use it. Don't wait until failing a class to ask for help.
Group dynamics
Cohorts get tribal. Don't get sucked into drama. Form a study group of 2-3 reliable people. Skip the rest.
If you're falling behind
Talk to your instructor early. Most schools have remediation pathways. Failing one course is recoverable; ignoring it isn't.
Frequently asked
How many hours/week to study?
15-25 hours outside class for full-time programs. ABSN closer to 30-40.
Best note-taking app?
Whatever you'll actually use. OneNote, Notion, paper notebook all work. Switching apps costs you the time to switch.
